With spooky season upon us, I have a confession to make. I love a good ghost story, anecdote, or any kind of unexplainable, supernatural encounter.
Sadly, I don’t have any personal ghostly experiences, just the odd tale of malfunctioning electronics and other weird coincidences. Perhaps I’ll share those at a later date, but for now, some thoughts on why ghost stories are so intriguing and enduring.
Ghost stories, the good ones, are a comfortable context for the intolerable parts of being human. They make conversations about complex realities a bit more accessible. They invite us to sit in the discomfort of the unknown.
Yes, there’s the scary bit, which can be fun to a point. But at the heart of every ghostly tale is a single truth — life should be valued and cherished.
You read that right, ghost stories are about life. Feel free to disagree, but I stand by it.
Ghost stories are born from the darker sides of life. They force us to face the fact death is in fact a part of life and that our actions, whether well-intentioned or not, go far beyond ourselves. Both of which, can be incredibly uncomfortable thoughts.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the stories we tell offer the hope that in some way our existence goes beyond our physical form. They remind us of the impact of our lives, both the good and the bad. We live on through the stories told.
Be Kind. Be Brave. Stay Awkward.
