After unintentionally taking a few weeks off, I want to sneak in a few words before we say goodbye to Mental Health Awareness Month (a.k.a. May).
I realize that by using the word “mental” followed by “health,” I may have scared a few people off. If you’re still here, thank you. Those two words have been stigmatized in a way that makes it incredibly difficult to start a simple but vital, open conversation surrounding mental health.
That being said, words do matter, and sometimes you have to use some different ones to get people to hear what you’re saying.
So, here are some simple steps to take to feel better inside and out.
Take a walk…bonus points if it involves nature.
Write a to-do list.
Read a book.
Drink some water…coffee does not count.
Have a snack…see the above comment about coffee.
Connect with your people.
Have some alone time.
Repeat as needed.
I’m guessing that most of us already do some or all of these things. Even those still clenching their jaws at the thought of “mental health.”
My point is, mental health is usually simple. It’s taking those tiny steps with intention and taking care of others by taking care of ourselves first.
Be Kind. Be Brave. Stay Awkward…drink some water and relax your jaw.
