Colorful Chaos

We’re just over two weeks out from the U.S. presidential election. We’ve nearly made it after endless campaigns, a few debates, and a couple of plot twists.

At this stage, even the most dedicated political junkie has all but reached their limit. Your average semi-engaged voter has just completely checked out, either because they know who and what they’re voting for or because of a general apathy.

If you find yourself on the verge of indifference, I get it, and I’d like to offer you a bit of hope. I promise it’s only slightly political.

Unless you’ve just completely disconnected from the world, are living your best hermit life, and completely missed this post’s banner image, photos of last week’s auroras’ expanded shows probably found their way to your retinas.

What you may have missed amidst the barrage of photogenic particles is the sheer volume of wonder. Beyond those photos were millions (if not billions) of people who looked up at the night sky with a renewed sense of appreciation for the mysteries of the universe.

It’s tempting to label such events as escapes, but perhaps wanting to connect to the natural world isn’t the escape. Maybe turning to nature is a return to reality and all of its colorful chaos.

This moment defied our culture of isolation and polarization. It brought people together not for or against something, but just to appreciate the beauty of our world. If that’s not hope, I don’t know what is.

Be Kind. Be Brave. Stay Awkward. Check your voter registration and make a plan to vote.
