Resolve to Reflect

Welcome to 2024. For those in the northern hemisphere, it’s the beginning of winter. It’s a time of rest and reserve. It’s cold and the call for coziness is at its peak. Yet we’re also being called to dive head first into our New Year’s resolutions.

Partial disclosure, I am not a New Year’s resolution person. Don’t get me wrong. Change is good. In fact, it’s inevitable. But forcing it because the calendar and society say to is a recipe for disappointment, especially in the middle of winter. It’s no wonder most resolutions have run their course by February.

Full disclosure, what I am is an anytime-of-the-year reflection person. For me, that means asking myself questions. What’s working? What’s not? What could be better?

I like to think that this process is at the heart of most resolutions, whether they’re made for a new year, new day, or new minute. Only it’s been drowned out by the need for instant results. When everything and everyone needs to be new and improved yesterday, we’re set up to fail before we even begin.

Whether you’re a resolution person or not, I hope your new year is off to a start. I hope it’s the kind of start you need, and I have a feeling it is. Even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Be Kind. Be Brave. Stay Awkward.
