Practical Protest

There is a lot going on in the world right now. Calling it overwhelming seems like a gross understatement. It is heartbreaking and can leave even the most aggressively optimistic feeling hopeless.

I don’t have any answers for solving the world’s many problems, but I do know that protest is essential to surviving moments like this. Protest can look like holding a sign and marching against the onslaught of cruelty, but it doesn’t have to.

It can look like claiming a moment of peace and watching the sun rise before you let the noise of the day in. It can look like creativity. Art is often the antidote, and art is everywhere. It can look like community. The world seems a lot less scary when you’re reminded of all the good people in it, and there are so, so many good people. I promise.

Hope is protest. Joy is protest. Both are the opposite of what the powers that be want you to feel right now. Holding onto hope and seeking out joy is the greatest act of rebellion.

Be Kind. Be Brave. Stay Awkward. Stay safe and keep protesting.
